Bali History
The unique, rich, culture and traditions of Bali are a mixture of many influences, this is a brief historic summary:
Bali's history can be traced bank to Neolithic times with the discovery of stone tools, dating back to 2,500 BC.
Bali's greatest influence historically has been
java
, its neighbouring island.
Bali was once ruled by the Hindu Majapahit Empire from 1293-1520 AD. The most influential change was the introduction of the Caste system, which is still part of their culture today. Rajahs (Kings) reigned over small kingdoms across the Balinese islands, this remained so for 400 years. These small kingdoms became the eight provinces you see today.
The Dutch first came to Bali in 1597 in search of land and spices from which they could profit. The rulers of the islands were feuding at the time which weakened Bali which made it easier for the Dutch to take over. Which they did on the 14th September 1906. The Dutch colonisation of Bali continued until the Second World War when the Japanese took control of Bali for three years during the Second World War (1942-1945).
After Japan's Pacific surrender in August 1945 the Dutch attempted to return to Bali and regain control but Bali resisted, this time armed with Japanese weapons. The Dutch tried to maintain their rule for another 4 years until they realised they were no longer the masters. In 1949 Indonesia was released from Dutch control and became independent, the first President being Sukarno. Political unrest prevailed for many years, until 1966 when Suharto took over power. Suharto's military led rule ended in June 1999 when Indonesia enjoyed their first free parliamentary election since 1955 which resulted in President Megawati (daughter of Sukarno) being elected. Her rule lasted until 2004 when former military general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was elected, he remains President of Indonesia today. Indonesian's next general election is 2014.
The Balinese have maintained a cultural identity and belief system that stems back to the Hindu Majapahit Empire.
